How our text tools work

All of these tools process your text directly in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, so they are safe for drafts, client documents and private lists. Results update instantly, even for long documents, because there is no round trip to a server.

Counting rules follow common conventions. Words are sequences of characters separated by spaces, and character counts are shown both with and without spaces, since different platforms count them differently. Reading time assumes a typical silent reading speed, and speaking time a comfortable presentation pace. For typical word counts by page, essay type and platform, see our guide on how many words are in a page, an essay or a blog post.

Tips for working with text

Check limits on the final version. Headings, captions and footnotes change the count, so run the word counter again after the last edit rather than relying on an earlier figure.

Keep URLs short and descriptive. A good slug uses lowercase words separated by hyphens and drops filler words, which makes links easier to read and share. If a URL also needs query parameters or special characters, the URL encoder and decoder percent-encodes them safely.

When comparing structured data such as configuration files or API responses, format both versions consistently first, for example with the JSON formatter, so the diff shows real changes rather than spacing differences.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. Every text tool runs entirely in your browser, and your text never leaves your device. Closing or refreshing the page clears it.

Does the word counter count hyphenated words as one word?

Yes. A hyphenated term such as "well-known" has no spaces, so it counts as a single word, which matches how most word processors count.

What is the difference between Title Case and Sentence case?

Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each main word, as in a headline. Sentence case capitalizes only the first word and proper nouns, as in ordinary prose. Many style guides now prefer sentence case for web headings.

Why use lorem ipsum instead of real text?

Placeholder text lets designers and clients judge layout, spacing and typography without being distracted by the meaning of the words. It should always be replaced with real content before a page goes live.
