How Many Words Is a Page, an Essay or a Blog Post?

Typical word counts for pages, essays, blog posts, social posts and meta descriptions, plus how long each takes to read aloud.

Updated 5 min read

Teachers set essays in pages, editors commission articles in words, and social platforms cap posts in characters. Converting between them is a constant source of confusion, partly because the answer depends on font, spacing and margins. A "three-page essay" can mean 750 words or 1,500 depending on who is asking.

This guide gives realistic word counts for pages, essays, blog posts, speeches and social posts, explains what changes the numbers and shows how long each takes to read or say aloud. To measure your own draft as you write, paste it into our free word counter, which also estimates reading and speaking time.

How many words are on a page?

With the most common academic settings (a 12-point font such as Times New Roman or Arial and 1-inch or 2.5 cm margins), a single-spaced page holds about 500 words and a double-spaced page about 250. Those are rules of thumb, not guarantees: dialogue, short paragraphs, headings and lists all leave white space and lower the count.

Font choice matters more than many people expect. Wider fonts such as Arial or Verdana fit fewer words per line than Times New Roman, and moving from 12-point to 11-point can add roughly 15 to 20% more text to each page. If a teacher specifies a page count, they usually specify the formatting too, precisely to stop students stretching or squeezing the layout.

  • 1 page: about 500 words single-spaced, 250 double-spaced.
  • 2 pages: about 1,000 words single-spaced, 500 double-spaced.
  • 3 pages: about 1,500 words single-spaced, 750 double-spaced.
  • 5 pages: about 2,500 words single-spaced, 1,250 double-spaced.
  • 10 pages: about 5,000 words single-spaced, 2,500 double-spaced.

How long is an essay?

Essay length depends on the level and the purpose. A short school essay is often 300 to 1,000 words, a typical university assignment 1,500 to 3,000 words, and a dissertation many thousands more. College admissions essays are deliberately short: the Common App personal statement allows up to 650 words, so every sentence has to earn its place.

When a word limit is set, aim to land within about 10% of it unless the instructions say otherwise. Writing far under the limit usually means an argument is thin, while going over can cost marks or get an application cut off. Many institutions exclude the bibliography and title page from the count, so check before trimming.

How long should a blog post be?

There is no ideal length that guarantees search rankings. The right length is however many words it takes to fully answer the reader's question. A quick news update or announcement might be 300 to 600 words, a practical how-to article 1,000 to 1,500 words, and an in-depth guide 2,000 words or more.

Search engines look for helpful, original content rather than a word target, and padding a post to hit a number tends to make it worse. Clear headings, a descriptive title and a clean URL help more. Our URL slug generator turns a post title into a short, readable web address.

Consistent capitalization matters too, and our case converter quickly fixes headings typed in the wrong case.

How long does it take to read or say a number of words?

Adults reading non-fiction silently average roughly 240 words per minute, though speeds vary widely. Speaking is slower: a comfortable presentation pace is around 130 to 150 words per minute, slower still with pauses for slides or questions.

For speeches, work backwards from the time slot. A 5-minute talk needs about 650 to 750 words, and a 10-minute talk roughly 1,300 to 1,500. Rehearsing out loud with a timer is the only reliable check, because nerves tend to speed people up.

  • 500 words: about 2 minutes to read, 3.5 to 4 minutes to speak.
  • 1,000 words: about 4 minutes to read, 7 to 8 minutes to speak.
  • 1,500 words: about 6 minutes to read, 10 to 11.5 minutes to speak.
  • 2,000 words: about 8.5 minutes to read, 13 to 15.5 minutes to speak.

Character limits for social posts and search snippets

Online, limits are usually set in characters rather than words. Counting characters, including spaces, matters most for short-form text where a cut-off sentence looks careless. Typical limits at the time of writing are listed below, though platforms change them from time to time.

  • Page title for search results: aim for about 50 to 60 characters so it is not truncated.
  • Meta description: about 150 to 160 characters.
  • X (Twitter) post: 280 characters for standard accounts.
  • Instagram caption: up to 2,200 characters, with only the first line or two shown before "more".
  • LinkedIn post: up to 3,000 characters.

How many words are in a book?

Most adult novels run from about 70,000 to 100,000 words, with fantasy and science fiction often longer and novellas between about 20,000 and 40,000. A printed paperback page holds roughly 250 to 300 words, so an 80,000-word novel fills about 270 to 320 pages depending on the trim size and typesetting.

Designers often need to know how a page will look before the real copy is written. Placeholder text from our lorem ipsum generator can be produced by word or paragraph count, so you can test a layout at the length you expect the final text to be.

Tips for hitting a word count

Whether you are trying to reach a minimum or trim to a maximum, it is easier with a plan than by editing at random. You will find more free writing helpers in our text tools collection.

  • Outline first and give each section a rough word budget that adds up to the target.
  • To cut, remove filler phrases such as "in order to" and "it is important to note that".
  • To expand, add a concrete example, a counter-argument or a short summary rather than repeating points.
  • Check the count on the final version, after headings and captions are added or removed.
  • Read the brief to see whether references, footnotes and titles count toward the limit.

Key takeaways

  • A typical page is about 500 words single-spaced or 250 words double-spaced at 12-point.
  • Font, size, margins and paragraph style can change the words per page considerably.
  • Readers manage around 240 words per minute; speakers around 130 to 150.
  • Blog posts should be as long as the topic needs; there is no magic word count for search.
  • Social platforms and search snippets limit characters, not words, so count both.
