How to use the Days Until Calculator
- 1Optionally type a name for the event, such as a trip or a deadline.
- 2Choose the target date, or press one of the quick picks to jump to the next New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Halloween, US Thanksgiving or Christmas.
- 3Optionally set a time if the event starts at a specific hour; otherwise the countdown runs to midnight at the start of that day.
- 4Read the days remaining in the highlighted box, plus weeks and days, hours remaining and the day of the week.
- 5Watch the live countdown, which updates every second. If the date has passed, it shows how long ago it was instead.
How the days remaining are counted
The main result counts calendar days from today to the target date in your local time zone. If today is October 12, 2026, Halloween on October 31 is 19 days away, Christmas is 74 days away and New Year's Day 2027 is 81 days away. On the day itself the result reads Today.
This is the same as counting how many times you will go to sleep before the date arrives, which is the number most people mean when they ask how many days are left. For the method behind it, see our guide on how to count the days between dates.
Countdown versus calendar days
The live countdown measures the exact time from this moment to the target time, so its day figure can be one lower than the calendar-day count. At 3 p.m. on October 12, Halloween is 19 calendar days away, but the countdown to midnight on October 31 shows 18 days and 9 hours, because part of today has already gone.
Hours remaining uses the same exact measurement. Adding a time is useful for events that begin at a set hour, such as a product launch at 9:00 or a flight departure, so the countdown hits zero at the right moment.
Holiday dates and quick picks
Fixed-date holidays always fall on the same day of the year: New Year's Day on January 1, Valentine's Day on February 14, Halloween on October 31 and Christmas on December 25. US Thanksgiving moves, because it is the fourth Thursday in November: November 26 in 2026 and November 25 in 2027.
Each quick pick chooses the next occurrence. Once a holiday has passed this year, the button selects next year's date. The day of the week is shown too, which helps with planning: Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday.
Ideas for using a countdown
Countdowns help with planning as well as anticipation. Knowing that an exam is 6 weeks and 2 days away makes it easier to schedule revision, and seeing the number of days before a tax or application deadline encourages starting early. Weddings, holidays, retirement and the end of a project are other popular targets.

Frequently asked questions
Does the count include today?
No. The result is the number of days from today until the target date, so tomorrow is 1 day away. This matches how people usually count down to an event.
What happens when the date has passed?
The highlighted result changes to show how many days ago the date was, and the countdown shows the time elapsed since it. To work out an exact age instead, use the age calculator.
Which time zone does the countdown use?
It uses the time zone set on your device. If you are counting down to an event in another time zone, convert its start time to your local time before entering it.
How many weeks until the date?
The Weeks and days card divides the days remaining into whole weeks plus the days left over. For example, 74 days is 10 weeks and 4 days.
Does the page need to stay open for the countdown?
The countdown runs in your browser and is recalculated from the current time every second, so it is always accurate when you return to the page. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere. Find more date and time calculators on the category page.
